People impacted by lung cancer often experience high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. They can also have greater unmet emotional and physical needs compared to those diagnosed with other types of cancer. GO2 for Lung Cancer is determined to fill gaps in support services by offering research-based programs like Mind Over Matter.

Inside our Mind Over Matter program

Mind Over Matter can help people diagnosed with and caring for someone with lung cancer handle the big feelings, like fear, worry, and sadness, that people often experience after diagnosis and treatment. The program is a 5-week interactive, small group series held virtually on Zoom.

People enrolled in the program will learn tips and tools, including:

  • Understanding how the connection between our thoughts, feelings, and body can help combat cancer-related stress.
  • Exploring how to make choices that reflect our personal values and what is most important to us.
  • Learning how to use our personal strengths to gain a new perspective on challenging situations.
  • Power of the pause: Intentionally stopping what we are doing during times of stress.
  • Creating a plan for managing tough situations using the new skills in your toolbox.

What participants are saying

We held 2 Mind Over Matter series in 2024 and heard from group members that it helped them to slow down strong emotions and pull themselves out of stressful situations. One attendee said, “I love that the program was not simply a list of tips and tricks but rather a structure that contained a wide variety of coping skills and a system for coping.” Another participant added, “I learned some coping techniques that I could start using immediately.”

Members also commented on how helpful it was to be in a group with others impacted by lung cancer. One person shared that having people who truly understand made it easier to talk about her diagnosis. Another stated, “It was great to listen to others sharing their experiences and how they used the tools. I loved learning from the examples.”
