What is Mind Over Matter?

Mind Over Matter is a guided, small-group program designed to help people build practical coping skills to manage cancer-related stress, overwhelming thoughts, and strong feelings.

GO2 for Lung Cancer offers Mind Over Matter, which was developed by Inova Peterson Life with Cancer, to anyone in the United States impacted by lung cancer, whether you were diagnosed recently or years ago, or are a caregiver or other loved one.

What to expect

Mind Over Matter is a 5-week program with weekly meetings lasting 90 minutes. It’s offered several times throughout the year.

Weekly topics include:

  • Week 1 — The Mind-Body Connection: Learn about the connection between our thoughts, feelings, and body, including relaxation strategies to combat cancer-related stress.
  • Week 2 — Our Values: Explore how to make choices aligned with what matters most to you.
  • Week 3 — Reframing: Use your personal strengths to gain a new perspective on challenging situations.
  • Week 4 — Power of the Pause: Learn how to intentionally stop and pause during moments of stress.
  • Week 5 — Making a Plan: Bring it all together and create a personal plan for managing tough situations using the new skills in your toolbox.

To get the greatest benefit from the program, we ask that you attend all 5 sessions.

“I love that this program was not simply a list of tips and tricks, but rather a structure that contained a wide variety of skills and a system of coping."

Thank you all for providing such helpful insights into dealing with the many big emotions and anxieties faced by lung cancer patients.

I will be using the exercises in daily life, as well as when dealing with lung cancer-specific moments.

Mind Over Matter helped me find solid ground when the fear and anxiety made me feel like I was drowning.

Mind Over Matter has given me tools to use and I find that they come into my scope of awareness. Whereas before I felt like I was floundering in stressful situations.

I am thankful to now have a stronger set of tools to help cope with situations we often find ourselves in, in navigating this diagnosis.
