Senior Manager, Support Services and Community Education

team

1. What drew you to GO2?

I decided to join GO2 for many reasons, but ultimately, it was the perfect fit. Ten members of my immediate family have been diagnosed with various types of cancer, and my grandfather, uncle, and father all had a lung cancer diagnosis. I was looking for an opportunity to work with people affected by cancer and creatively utilize my education and experience to serve the cancer community. At the time, my father had recently been diagnosed with small cell lung cancer, and GO2 had an opening on their Patient Support team for someone to lead their newly developing Small Cell Lung Cancer Initiative and assist with HelpLine calls and emails. This resonated with me. I joined GO2 because it is an organization that truly listens to the lung cancer community, evolves to meet the community’s needs, and strives to close gaps in care. The team-oriented approach with opportunities to work across the organization was also very appealing as it supports creativity and generates new ideas that lead to developing new programs and services.

2. What has your experience been while working at GO2?

I began my time at GO2 in 2021 as the Manager of Patient Outreach and Special Initiatives on the Patient Support team. My primary role then was to lead our developing Small Cell Lung Cancer Initiative and assist with HelpLine calls and emails. As the Small Cell Lung Cancer Initiative grew and expanded, my role within the Patient Support team started to broaden and shift. An opportunity arose to utilize my education and experience creatively in further developing GO2’s comprehensive suite of educational materials, ensuring they align with plain language and health literacy guidelines. To reflect the change in responsibilities, my new role at GO2 became Senior Manager of Patient Support and Community Education.

3. What is your favorite part of working here?

Working in Patient Support allows for a direct and personal connection with people affected by lung cancer, which is one of my favorite aspects of my job. The flexibility within my role allows for the unique needs of each person affected by lung cancer to be heard and addressed to the best of our ability. I also enjoy integrating a variety of other tasks and responsibilities, as well as time with colleagues, which balances out my role and maintains variety in my work week. Connecting with people, flexibility, opportunities to grow, and warmth of my colleagues are why I love working for GO2.

4. What is the GO2 value that most resonates with you and why?

People -first is the value that resonates with me most and it sets the priority for each day. When I first started at GO2, one of my colleagues told me that when her to-do list is way too long, she prioritizes taking care of people’s needs first and other things second. Having been with my dad throughout his experience with small cell lung cancer, I remember feeling overwhelmed by everything that was happening so fast, needing more information, not knowing how to find it, and feeling somewhat lost. Maintaining our people-first perspective is vital in everything we do. It’s what people need, and it’s why we are here.

5. What advice would you offer to new hires?

I’d encourage new hires at GO2 to branch out and get to know people across the organization. There are so many good people here with a variety of backgrounds, experiences, gifts, and talents who deeply care about the lung cancer community. It’s valuable to be able to pool our resources and learn from each other. We also have a lot of fun when we are together!

"I've been fortunate to have the flexibility and autonomy to explore different areas of interest within the organization, which has kept my work engaging and challenging."

Director, Corporate Relations

team

1. What drew you to GO2?

I was initially drawn to GO2 because of its strong commitment to improving healthcare outcomes through a mission-driven approach. As a healthcare non-profit based in the DC area, GO2 was at the epicenter of policy and innovation, offering a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact on people's lives. Additionally, GO2's support for employee development, including flexibility for pursuing my MPH at GW, aligned perfectly with my career goals. I was eager to contribute my skills to a dynamic and growing organization, while also advancing my education in global public health.

2. What has your experience been while working at GO2?

My journey at GO2 has been incredibly rewarding and marked by growth and opportunity. Over the past 13 years, I've had the privilege of wearing multiple hats and contributing to various aspects of the organization. This experience has allowed me to develop a deep understanding of GO2's mission, programs, and operations which is incredibly valuable in my current role. I've been fortunate to have the flexibility and autonomy to explore different areas of interest within the organization, which has kept my work engaging and challenging. GO2's recognition and awareness of my strengths has been instrumental in my professional growth, enabling me to advance within the organization and take on increasingly impactful roles.

3. What is your favorite part of working here?

The most rewarding aspect of GO2 and one of the biggest reasons I have stayed for 13 years, is the harmonious blend of work and personal life. The flexibility allows me to prioritize my family without compromising my professional contributions. It's truly gratifying to have my skills recognized and nurtured, empowering me to tackle new challenges and make a significant impact for the lung cancer community. Beyond that, the collaborative spirit thrives here. My colleagues are not just knowledgeable, respective experts in their field, but are also deeply passionate about improving the lives of those impacted by lung cancer. This collective drive is truly inspiring. Additionally, building and maintaining relationships with external partners and advocates has been incredibly fulfilling. These connections extend my reach and allow me to make a broader difference.

4. What is the GO2 value that most resonates with you and why?

The GO2 value that most resonates with me is “synergistic”. My background in public health, particularly my master's thesis on global health partnerships between corporations and non-profit organizations, has deeply ingrained the importance of collaboration and collective goals. In my current role as Director of Corporate Relations, I leverage this understanding to identify and cultivate mutually beneficial partnerships. By recognizing the shared values and objectives between GO2 and our corporate partners, I’ve been able to develop, broaden, and sustain programs that amplify our impact on the global lung cancer community.

5. What advice would you offer to new hires?

My advice to new hires is to dive in, be curious, and ask plenty of questions. Don't be afraid to share your ideas and seek guidance when needed. Leverage the expertise of your colleagues by seeking their input and mentorship. GO2 is full of knowledgeable individuals who can help you grow professionally. Remember to always keep our mission at the heart of everything you do – relentlessly confronting lung cancer on every front, every day, for everyone. And finally, while hard work is essential in any non-profit, don't forget to find balance and enjoy the little moments. The GO2 team is fully dedicated to the lung cancer community, and beyond that—we are here to support each other.

"Depending on the day, I may be a researcher, an advocate, a unifier, etc., and I wouldn’t have it any other way, as these roles allow me to better understand and serve the lung cancer community."

Director, Community Engaged Research

team

1. What drew you to GO2?

I decided to join GO2 for Lung Cancer because I wanted to serve a broader community and leverage my expertise in a meaningful way. My professional experience and diverse background spanning academia, community practice, and pharmaceutical sectors aligned perfectly with serving as the Director of Community Engaged Research. When I discovered that every hour, 14 people die from lung cancer, and black men are impacted at a higher incidence than other groups, I knew that working for GO2 was an opportunity to address significant health disparities and serve marginalized communities. I loved that the company didn't just talk about health equity, but it was woven into their initiatives and values. I was so excited to join the team, and to this day, it remains the best decision I've made, one that I believe God has placed me in.

2. What has your experience been while working at GO2?

My journey at GO2 has been incredibly fulfilling and transformative. As the Director of Community Engaged Research, I collaborate closely with various community members and stakeholders to jointly identify, and address problems related to lung cancer by finding innovative solutions and implementing services for underserved patients. One experience that stands as a testament to why I do this work involved interviewing a mother of two whose husband was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer after a non-fatal car accident. She expressed deep regret, saying that if she had known lung cancer screening was available, she would have gotten her husband assessed earlier, potentially increasing his chances of survival. During our interview, she received a call from her husband's oncologist, and I could sense her confusion and distress. When she returned, she looked lost and concerned about why her husband had to stop treatment. To help, I initiated a three-way call with her doctor, with her permission, to ensure she fully understood the situation. This interview taught me two critical lessons: first, the need to improve awareness about lung cancer screening, and second, the necessity of providing patients with the tools and support they need during a lung cancer diagnosis. Depending on the day, I may be a researcher, an advocate, a unifier, etc., and I wouldn’t have it any other way, as these roles allow me to better understand and serve the lung cancer community.

3. What is your favorite part of working here?

The people, for sure. Our personalities mesh so well. Although we work remotely, we form strong connections and foster a supportive environment. I know I can count on my team members for anything, which is always reassuring. From a research perspective, I love the autonomy I have to conduct research in health disparities, and with our network of over 850 Centers of Excellence, we can initiate projects anywhere. I also value the strong support from our funders, who sustain our research initiatives. Lastly, the company’s commitment to work-life balance, along with generous holidays to spend with our families, is the icing on the cake. This balance is important to me because it allows me to return renewed and refreshed, ready to bring new ideas to the table.

4. What is the GO2 value that most resonates with you and why?

The GO2 value that resonates most with me is "Authentic." I appreciate being able to show up every day as my true self in an environment that encourages open discussions about topics I am passionate about. Our team is diverse, coming from all walks of life, and the willingness of everyone to openly share their journeys and stories fosters a familial atmosphere.

5. What advices would you offer to new hires?

Take every opportunity to get to know your colleagues; they bring a wealth of knowledge and experience. This organization provides a unique environment where you have direct access to a cross-functional team. You will start with one project and, through collaboration, develop it into something even more impactful. The close interaction with various departments fosters significant professional growth and development.

"Between the cutting-edge research and best-in-class support network, I knew that this would be an organization that I would be proud to work for."

Kevin Schaeffer

Manager, Data Integration

team

1. What drew you to GO2?

I’ve always been passionate about non-profit work, volunteering and working with a few organizations before joining GO2 I also knew that my wife and I wanted to live in the DC area, so we were looking for jobs there (because at the time LCA was based in DC). When I saw the listing, I applied immediately. I didn’t know anything about lung cancer but could tell from the website and my interview that it was an organization that was the forefront of fighting the disease. Between the cutting-edge research and best-in-class support network, I knew that this would be an organization that I would be proud to work for.

2. What has your experience been while working at GO2?

I started at GO2 in a Development and Operations Coordinator role and have been able to work my way through several positions, including my current role as Manager of Data Integration. My managers have always been helpful in guiding me down a path that was fulfilling both for me as a professional, as well as good for the organization.

3. What is your favorite part of working here?

I’m going to cheat and say my two favorite things. The first would be the work that we are doing. I think is absolutely vital to our community and, as I said above, I am so proud to tell people that I work at an organization like GO2. The second thing would be the benefits and work/life balance. The organization truly cares about its employees and does everything they can to make this a healthy and productive work environment.

4. What is the GO2 value that most resonates with you and why?

Our value of being equitable and inclusive most resonates with me because there are so many disparities across healthcare, and lung cancer screening and care is no different. I love that GO2 fights the stigma around lung cancer and really strives to eliminate the inequities and barriers to receiving care.

5. What advice would you offer to new hires?

My advice to a new hire at GO2 would be to really immerse yourself in all the organization does, not just your department. I love staff meetings where we get to hear about all the incredible work our different teams are doing, and I think it’s really important as a new hire to just be a sponge and absorb as much of that great info as possible.

"Knowing our events help connect survivors and their families, and raise money for the programs that benefit them, is the reason I am here."

People First. It is easy to get caught up in daily responsibilities & tasks, but it's important to remember the purpose behind our work.

Take the opportunity to get to know as many people outside of your team as possible. There are so many inspiring, intelligent employees at GO2, and they all motivate me to be better.
