Phone Buddy Program

Following a lung cancer diagnosis, it is common to feel a sense of loneliness; like you are the only one going through this experience. But we want you to know that you are not alone. There are over 400,000 Americans living with lung cancer today. Our Phone Buddy program helps connect you with lung cancer survivors who have walked in your shoes and want to give back by being there for you as you navigate the lung diagnosis and treatment.

What is the Phone Buddy Program?

The Phone Buddy Program is a peer-to-peer support program for people with lung cancer. Our Phone Buddy volunteers have either been through or are going through lung cancer treatment and as a result are uniquely qualified to lend support and share information and resources.

As part of the matching process, our staff talk to you about your needs and match preferences. As often as possible, matches are made based on the following:

Stage of lung cancer

Treatment plan

Symptoms and side effects

Profile (e.g. life experience like age, recurrence, and employment)

6 Reasons to Connect with a Phone Buddy

  1. COPING TECHNIQUES: Find out how other people have coped with a diagnosis
  2. TREATMENT KNOWLEDGE: Hear your Phone Buddy’s experience with treatment
  3. DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS: Discover how others have dealt with difficult questions and uncomfortable conversations with their doctors and family members
  4. DEALING WITH SCANS: Share your own thoughts and feelings about upcoming scans with someone who understands and learn about ways your Phone Buddy has coped with the dreaded “scanxiety” (anxiety from upcoming scans)
  5. THE “NEW NORMAL”: See what life is like after treatment and how to adjust to a “new normal”
  6. FINDING SUPPORT: Find support even if you do not have access to a local support group, or just want additional support outside of a group you are currently attending

Volunteer as a Phone Buddy

We are always welcoming new volunteers with a variety of treatment experiences who are open to talking with others impacted by the disease. Learn more about what it means to be a Phone Buddy.
