By Laurie Fenton-Ambrose, CEO, President, and Co-Founder GO2 for Lung Cancer

I share the sad news of the passing of one of GO2 for Lung Cancer’s longstanding Board members, Amory Houghton, Jr.  “Amo”, as he was known by family, friends and constituents, was an admired, respected and accomplished businessman and public servant.  He joined our efforts in honor of his late wife Priscilla Dewey Houghton, a three- time survivor, Board member, and early pioneering advocate on the front lines challenging stigma, elevated awareness and demanding a better public health response to the disease.  When Priscilla succumbed to lung cancer, Amo stepped in to fill her shoes on our Board and continued her legacy of guiding our foundation’s work.

Amo joined our Board after serving 18 years in Congress representing the Southern Tier District in Upstate New York.  He was Harvard-educated and a Marine Corps veteran.  He considered missionary work for the Episcopal Church, before the calling of public service emerged after spending 19 years as Chief Executive of the business started by his great-great grandfather in 1851, Corning Glass Works, known today as Corning, Inc.  Amo was a straight talker, problem solver, had an infectious laugh, and was beloved by all.  I had the privilege of working with Amo in Congress for several years as his legislative assistant and consider this experience as one of the most significant highlights of my professional career.

Amo was an iconic figure – his legacy will carry on. On behalf of our Board and staff we send our deepest sympathies to the Houghton family.
