November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month (#lcam), a time for us to pull out the bullhorn and amplify our collective voices to speak up and speak out about the importance of screening, comprehensive biomarker testing, research, funding, community engagement, and an end to the stigma surrounding lung cancer.

Awareness months are seemingly everywhere—but they are important. According to Healthline, a publication that tracks health awareness campaigns:

“One of the biggest tools we have to fight health conditions is the power of human connection. That’s why awareness months, weeks, and days are so important: They rally us together to spread awareness and show support.”

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., and almost 230,000 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2020. On Average, lung cancer kills one woman in America every eight minutes. And nearly 20 percent of men and women diagnosed with this disease are never smokers.

You know the facts—and LCAM is our time to make sure Americans across the country do too. November is our time to shine a spotlight on the human faces behind the facts of lung cancer.

Let’s raise our collective voices.

Here at GO2 for Lung Cancer, we’re asking the entire lung cancer community to help spread awareness and take action. Through our LCAM webpage, we’ll deliver handy communications tools and guidance on how to use fact graphics, selfie videos, and more.

We’ll also share our external awareness campaigns, including digital advertising seen on Google and elsewhere, a one-month AARP digital ad campaign, and an ad and articles in a special issue of USA TODAY. In addition, you’ll see you’ll be able to read our contributed article in Conquer Cancer and Nature Magazine.

Awareness matters.

There have been 17 new FDA drug approvals in just the past 2 years, bringing hope to patients for improved outcomes and a better quality of life. In addition, each new treatment and every news story or Facebook post brings renewed attention to the disease and attracts new research dollars and more scientific interest in fighting lung cancer.

Our efforts are paying off. But we have more to do. Let’s get to work together. Take action this November. And don’t forget to add your voice to our call to the House Resolution on Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
