Susan and Rodney Wellman

GO2 for Lung Cancer recently asked people to share stories about their lung cancer heroes—people who have inspired them and gone above and beyond for the cause.

Rodney Wellman was a lung cancer hero.

A Secret Service agent based in Phoenix, Wellman was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in October 2018. A runner, he decided to use running to raise money for research into the disease. His first race: a 5K organized by GO2 for Lung Cancer. He raised $8,000. That’s when he decided to run a 100k race.

His wife, Susan was awarded GO2 for Lung Cancer’s 2021 Summer Jam Lung Cancer Hero award on his behalf. As she said in nominating her husband, “He became a great advocate and fundraiser to make everyone aware of how important it was to put up a fight against lung cancer.”

Today, Susan Wellman continues her husband’s legacy. She has raised close to $5,000 for GO2 for Lung Cancer this summer as part of June 26’s Summer Jam Virtual 5K Your Way (view the Summer Jam Rally interview with Susan here). She and others like her are part of a community that harnesses their passion for combating lung cancer into action.
