When Bonnie Bishop-Ulrich found out she had stage 3 non-small cell lung cancer, she literally fell to her knees. She couldn’t bear the thought of missing her grandchildren grow up and took a leap of faith to join GO2 for Lung Cancer’s virtual Hollywood, Florida event on October 24. As a first-time fundraiser, she shares why she’s glad she took the leap for our Do 2020 YOUR Way event:

What is your connection to lung cancer?

I am a stage 3a non-small cell lung cancer patient survivor.

How did you become involved with GO2 for Lung Cancer?

When first diagnosed, I starting doing research to find support groups for lung cancer patients. I came across GO2 [Foundation], read Bonnie Addario’s amazing and inspirational story, attended a bunch of the “Living Room” sessions, and I almost immediately felt like I belonged. I found my support people. I then further researched all the amazing clinical trials and treatments that have been possible because of the research and advocacy of the GO2 for Lung Cancer and I was hooked.

What are you looking forward to with the upcoming virtual Hollywood event?

Since this is my 1st virtual event, I am hoping that for a day we can all just have fun and raise lots of money for more research. RESEARCH MATTERS!

As a first-time fundraiser, what has surprised you most about your fundraising experience?

That has to be the support I have received from my family and friends and the genuine interest they have taken while I’m on this journey.

What advice would you give to others who have never fundraised?

Jump in. It can be life changing. And the people you meet, are unlike anyone else.

Do you have any other tips to share?

I think the most important thing I would share is to never give up. Research does matter. And by becoming involved, you can then become part of the solution. And that will ultimately lead to survivorship.
