We all have different interests and gifts to bring to the lung cancer movement. For so many, we want to do SOMETHING, but not sure what or how. John Matthews was in this position, and has since found his way to raise an incredible amount of money, while keeping a special promise. He explains:
In March of 2011, the heart and soul of The Matthews family, Kathleen Matthews, was diagnosed with lung cancer. Mom died nine painful months later, and a week before she died, I promised Mom I would do something.
During her illness, our family experienced the stigma and learned the statistics. So I knew I had my calling, and while talking on a panel as a caregiver a few years later, I committed to raising one million dollars during my lifetime because, well, when you tell Mom you are going to do something, you go big. Soon, that fundraising goal became a cross-country bike ride.
My motivation is simple. My Mom and Dad were my best friends. As I got older, we got closer and their deaths hurt deeply. This passion is also fueled by seeing the inequity in lung cancer funding and screening.
Our approach is to connect through cycling, giving anyone a way to join and have some fun. In addition, Temple University students run our social media program, and they have made a difference in the brand, our website and much more.
One story to share about kindness and generosity took place during that ride across the country. We were at dinner in Utah, wearing our Ride Hard Breathe Easy shirts. While talking with the waitress she asked what we were doing, and later reached into her pocket, said great work to all of us, and handed us a $20 bill.
For those out there fundraising, it can feel uncomfortable, especially now. However, if you explain why you are asking and what you are doing to make a difference, I have found people to be incredibly responsive.
At Ride Hard Breathe Easy, we have raised over $300,000 so far for GO2 for Lung Cancer to save, extend and improve the lives of those diagnosed with lung cancer. And our focus is on early detection, knowing that early detection means better outcomes.
So, look for us on August 22 for the 4th Annual Ride Hard Breathe Easy Classic, as we ride again, to raise money to fight lung cancer! If you are a cyclist in the Philadelphia area, you can join us on the road or virtually from anywhere!
Whether or not your passion is athletic, like John’s, you can create your own fundraiser through our Community Fundraising site, even during quarantine. We offer lots of resources and an individual coach to help you turn your passion into progress for others!
