Yesterday, the Women and Lung Cancer Research and Preventive Services Act (H.R. 4534/S. 2245) achieved a historic milestone and passed out of the House of Representatives. We thank the bill leaders, Congressman Brendan F. Boyle (D-PA-02) and Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA-01), for their joint effort and statement. We also extend our gratitude to the House Energy & Commerce Committee. The passage of this bill acknowledges the lives of the many women who died of lung cancer and those waiting on federal investment in women and lung cancer research as a long-sought priority.
H.R. 4534/S. 2245 is bicameral, bipartisan legislation that Requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services, in consultation with the Secretary of Defense and Secretary of Veterans Affairs, to conduct an interagency review to evaluate the status of and identify opportunities related to research on lung cancer in women and underserved populations; access to lung cancer preventive services; and strategic public awareness and education campaigns on lung cancer.
For more than a decade, we have been striving to accelerate this movement, and today, we extend our gratitude to the lung cancer advocates who joined our work in encouraging Congress to advance this bill, which will transform survivorship for our community.
The next step is for this bill to be considered by the Senate. As time runs out for this Congress, we will pick up next year with momentum from this year’s passage in the House.
