In early March, we surveyed the GO2 community to understand how recent federal executive orders are affecting patients, loved ones, healthcare providers, and researchers.
Themes from 239 completed surveys covered 4 key areas:
- Impact on daily life or work
- Effects on research and clinical trials
- Concerns about future implications
- Gaps in healthcare access and services
What we heard
The most consistent impact reported was on emotional and mental wellbeing. People cited increased anxiety and uncertainty that was driven by cuts to research funding and delays in care. One VA patient shared that routine dental appointments were postponed for more than 2 months due to staff cuts and a hiring freeze.
Others raised concerns about paused clinical trials, difficulty securing research funding, and the long-term impact on healthcare quality. We heard concerns about healthcare gaps for those living outside of big cities or in areas with limited services who may face even greater barriers in accessing new lung cancer treatments or screening due to changes in government-supported health programs.
A small number of participants saw potential benefits, such as cost savings or improved program oversight.
